Columbia Part I

Saturday we headed down to visit Lexi and get a tour of Columbia.

This is the original library that is actually not the active library. Rumor has it the books made the building so heavy it sank 4 inches every year.

That over there is the current library filled with the high strung 24 hour studiers.

We felt smarter just sitting there. Looking at our outfits I noticed Zach looked much more likely to be going to an Ivy League school with his preppy attire than I, with my high school kicks. I could use a little help in the grown up footwear dept.

We met up with Lexi and enjoyed admiring all the beautiful buildings ans getting a brief synopsis of each.

Harvest Festival

On Saturday, Zach and I spent the afternoon volunteering at the Inwood Harvest Festival. It is apparently a pretty big deal and a big chunk of the community comes out and brings their kids to participate. 

We were in charge of the spin art table. It was messy but we got to see a lot of cute kids and see a bunch of pretty great art. 

We ran into a lot of friends from the ward and had a good time enjoying the perfect fall weather and giving our Saturday a little bit more purpose.

Clinton St. Baking Company

We had heard rumors that Clinton St. Baking Company had some of New York's best pancakes. When we found a groupon online, we planned a double date with Cheslea. 

We all tried the delicious Ithaca root beer as we awaited our meal.  It was pretty dang good, for all you root beer fans out there.

Each couple got a burger and a stack of pancakes. We split everything so we could all try a bite of everything. 

The burgers and fries were good, the pancakes were good, but the syrup was amazing.

Zach could have bought a bottle and drizzled it on breakfast every morning had they been selling it in bottles. It was really good. It tasted like a smooth vanilla caramel cream sauce. 

As we left they gave us each a scone for the road. They were magnificent. We really enjoyed it and recommend it to all those pancake lovers out there.

People Watching Wednesday

1. The Laughing Man

We were standing on a busy street corner when I noticed a man, who happened to be laughing, walk up to this couple in front of me to join their conversation. He was looking them both in the eyes and laughing. As the light turned green the couple walked and this man kind of lingered, making it obvious they had no idea who this guys was. He fell behind the whole group and continued laughing to himself. For the next two blocks I could hear his laugh lingering behind me, a constant low, almost giggly laugh. 

2. Ferris Beuler

I was walking down the stairs to cross under the subway to get to the uptown train when I was stopped by a man and his wife pushing a stroller down the stairs. I ran scenarios through my head trying to figure out if I should help, push past, or stay at the slower speed. As I was thinking, a man walked down past me and grabbed one end of the stroller to help them finish bringing it smoothly and quickly down the stairs. As he passed I thought he looked exactly like Ferris Beuler, only a bit older. As I continued up the stairs behind him I got a good long look at his face as we crossed paths to board opposite trains. Yes, I was absolutely certain, it was Mathew Broderick. About my height with died brown hair and thick circular glasses. My day was definitely made.

Columbus Circle

What better way to end Columbus Day than by seeing his statue up close and personal. Usually you can't because it is in the middle of the road and his feet alone are 70 feet above the ground. An artist brought us all up close to him by building a house around him. So our friend Chelsea got us all tickets to walk around Columbus's living room. 

We had so much fun checking him out and admiring the creativity of it all. The view was incredible and worth the scary climb up the scaffolding stairs.

Papaya Dog #3 - The Original

We celebrated Columbus Day/ Canada's Thanksgiving by eating out at the original Papaya King. 

i have now tried three different juices and have found my favorite. The banana daquiri was heaven in a cup. It was like the juice of a creamy milkshake. Fabulous. 

We ate delicious dogs with our friend Chelsea and her roommate. It was a great way to celebrate the day Columbus found this land mass.

A Sunday Afternoon

Sunday morning, after a huge and delicious breakfast, we went on a walk. On our walk we found this delightful house. I want to re-build it with a porch, make it of brick, paint the shutters navy and place it right between our families. Perfect, right?

We absolutely love all of the huge and mature trees!

Sunday afternoon we took the kids to a corn maze. It took us about 45 minutes to walk our way through with the kids leading the way. We might have gone in a few circles but we solved the maze in excellent time. 

Our Sunday activities centered around General Conference, which is a church meeting broadcast to the world, where the Prophet is able to speak to members of the church around the world. For more on that click HERE.
